Media & Culture

The Foundation for Change is committed to promoting freedom of expression for all people. By supporting progressive, justice-minded work in culture, media and the arts, we aim to enhance the capacity of marginalized communities to make their voices heard. By supporting projects that blend “cultural work” with advocacy and community organizing, we promote a greater degree of justice in the control, creation and distribution of cultural expression in San Diego and Tijuana.

INITIATIVES

FEX/Media Justice Fund

In 2007 the Foundation for Change joined with the Funding Exchange to create a “FEX/Media Justice Fund” to support a greater degree of justice in the control, production and distribution of media in San Diego and Tijuana.

In 2007 grants totaling $20,000 were awarded to groups giving voice to marginalized communities within the San Diego/Tijuana region.  In 2008 grants totaling $27,000 will be awarded from the “FEX/Media Justice Fund.”

In January, 2008 the Foundation for Change convened “Media Justice in San Diego: A Community Conversation.”  Over 50 community activists and organizers convened to discuss questions like:

  • If San Diego is a conservative city, what does that mean for our organizing efforts?
  • How can the communities we serve be our ally in crafting the messages we produce?
  • How do we create mainstream media allies and while continuing to oppose negative corporate media values?

More grants from the “FEX/Media Justice Fund” will be announced in June, 2008.
