| Human Rights
The Foundation for Change is committed to the human rights of all people. This commitment has led us to support a wide variety of organizations working to empower peoples facing diverse kinds of disenfranchisement, oppression, marginalization and discrimination. Perhaps most famously, the Foundation for Change was funding lesbian / gay / bisexual / transgender organizations long before San Diego’s other, more mainstream philanthropic organizations began to do the same. Our early pioneering work inspires us to continue our work of “funding tomorrow’s mainstream causes today.”
SUCCESS STORIES
Centro Binacional de Derechos Humanos (Binational Center for Human Rights) defends the rights and interests of minority populations in Tijuana. Grants Awarded: 2003, 2004
"Our office received funding to support a very important project, in defense of the human rights of the transsexual community. The model the Foundation is developing strikes us as very interesting … First, it has a bi-national focus. Second, it funds non-governmental organizations that haven’t yet reached the level of the large, trans-national organizations."
-- Victor Clark Alfaro, Executive Director, Centro Binacional de Derechos Humanos

The Center for Social Advocacy (Heartland Human Relations) addresses diverse issues such as hate crimes, the civil rights violations experienced by newly arrived immigrants, human trafficking, youth alienation, and poverty. 2000, 2002, 2007
The American Friends Service Committee seeks to strengthen the voices of immigrant-led organizations in setting the national agenda for immigration policy and immigrants' rights. 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2007
INITIATIVES
San Diego LGBT Pride Fund
Since 1996 the Foundation has partnered with San Diego LGBT Pride to grant almost $200,000 to grassroots groups fostering pride in and respect for the LGBT community. In 2008 the Foundation for Change has matched a contribution from San Diego LGBT Pride to create a grantmaking pool of $27,000. Grants will support grassroots groups working with under-served LGBT populations, with half of the grant monies distributed to groups working in Tijuana, where the rights of sexual minorities are not as advanced as in San Diego. Grants from the 2008 San Diego LGBT Pride Fund will be announced in June, 2008.
